Raw Silk

How Raw Silk Differs from Other Silk

Raw silk fabric has a distinct look when compared to other silk fabrics due to differences in texture created by the processing of the silk fibers.

Raw Silk Fabric Fibers

All silk filaments produced by silkworms are coated with a natural gummy protein referred to as sericin. Raw silk undergoes minimal processing and therefore retains a significant amount of sericin, while other silks are processed to remove the sericin during degumming.

The greater amount of sericin present in raw silk provides extra strength and durability; however, it results in a coarser, slightly rougher texture and less sheen than more processed silks, which are softer, smoother, and have a glossier finish.

Characteristics of Raw Silk

Raw silk has natural slubs and irregularities which add a rustic, natural appearance to finished goods. It has less sheen and less pronounced colors than other silks.

The extra weight, stiffness, and lower sheen in raw silk due to the presence of sericin need to be considered in applications where flowing or delicate fabric drape, softness, and a high glossy sheen are required.

Uses for Raw Silk

Raw silk is often used for home decor, traditional clothing, and applications where a natural look is desired.
